Usually, babies and children have problems with the proteins in milk. Sometimes it is the lactose. Heavy cream has very little protein or lactose. That's why I asked.

Im curious tho OP, why do you need milk for french toast?
When I make it I just use an egg and dip the bread in, then fry in a pan. I dont use milk.

This is not a lactose problem. The issue is with the milk protein, casein. The only dairy product I know that is casein free is ghee (clarified butter) which is definitely something you don't want to put in your coffee. It's good for getting a buttery taste into baked goods, though.

Cream is not lactose free and it's certainly not dairy free. Please don't assume that lactose-free is the same thing as non-dairy. You'll make someone really sick by doing that.

OP here - thanks for all of the responses. I will try some of these out.

And nutrition doesn't matter to me that much right now; my main goal is to find something that I will like in my coffee.

almond milk for coffee hands down.

I've been using non dairy mills for 10+ years, so I've pretty much tried them all!
Hemp is great because it's thicker than many others. Soy is the most neutral taste and can be very creamy.
I like almond for cereal, drinking, etc but some brands like blue diamond and pacific will separate/clump in coffee and get a burnt taste if heated for a hot beverage.

Recently I've tried "ripple", which is pea protein based and it's very nice texture, good amount of protein.

Many brands have special "barista" and "creamer" products that are good for coffee.

Rice milk is gross, avoid that.

Califia almond milk for quality and price. MOM's has a couple of others that seem fancier but they are also a lot more expensive.

I like unsweetened almond milk the best. I do not have a brand preference. It seems to work well in recipes that call for milk.
