The driver of the two suspected shooters had pending gun and drug charges from a previous arrest. I like how the mayor is more interested in getting illegal guns off the street than doing anything meaningful to reform the non existent juvenile justice system in the city.

This kid had FIVE prior arrests! What is the STATUS of the Youth Rehabilitation Act today?

What happened to this 2016 promise by Mayor and Council?? After the Washington Post expose of the rapes assaults and murders committed by Youth Act reoffenders? Did Councilmember McDiuffy derail it? Was it remformed????

I just saw in the news today that police arrested a 14 year old (!) in connection with the murder of the contractor in Trinidad. A hard-working immigrant was shot in the head in broad daylight by a 14 year old, but we know that the killer will probably serve a couple years in prison (if that), before being released because he is a minor.

I think if we were serious about holding our leadership's feet to the fire and forcing them to come up with better solutions, we would be calling our council members every day and maybe even protesting. But I know no one will go any further than posting about it on the internet...

A few years? That's too harsh for DC, the kid will maybe serve a year or two at most before being diverted to a program that doesn't work.

I think our city uses "federal oversight" as an excuse to not identify and plug gaps. At the same time, our Councilmembers propose laws such as paying criminals and we have rehabilitation legislation for youth offenders that offers them impunity to reoffend WITHOUT meaningful rehabilitation (just warehousing). This is ON our politicians, at the end of the day the buck stops there. I feel for you for your move. It will be nice too live someplace where efforts to create safety and good services are in place.

These folks victimize their base more than anyone else... That's what I don't understand. And I'm not saying that in a snide accusatory way, I'm saying it in a if politicians truly wanted to help the people they stand for (which is almost all of us except the criminals) they would find a way to put a wedge in this turnstile. I hate the consistency halfway house absconder stories, who don't have warrants through negligence and go on heinous crime sprees. Literally tolerating wolves among us.

I'm with you. It seems that nearly every high profile crime in this area has been committed by a repeat offender, with gaping holes evident in the criminal justice process. I'm convinced our leaders are more concerned about offending their base.

The Post did an excellent series last year on D.C.'s revolving door approach to criminal justice - particularly when it comes to "justice-involved young people."

Have been reading the safety section of Metro Section recently and two incidents have caught my eye. One is of a repeat offender from a halfway house who had absconded--and then fired shots down the escalator at Columbia Heights. This guy had violated the terms of his halfway house conditions for over a month and no-one had noted it in the 'system' (federal clerical error ). His family address was in Columbia Heights and guess where he turned up? A little shoe leather could have found this guy, just based on his really unfortunate choice of face tattoos. We spend so much time concerned about legal gun ownership in DC and meanwhile we have this guy "OK corralling" into metro. There are so many schools and families in that area!

The other story is a repeat SEXUAL OFFENDER who OFFENDS ON METRO and Wmata say their hands are tied to ban him permanently from riding public transportation. Apparently, when someone offends on WMATA-by punching a driver or flashing or assaulting a passenger, the judge just bans them from the route it occurred on and they ride and reoffend on the other routes. This man is a serial Metro Sex offender who has even offended against the SAME WOMAN TWICE. Seriously?

I am happy to dig up the links if you are unfamiliar with either story. I understand that both DC and WMATA have complex jurisdictions with different types of federal, local and transport policing. I am thinking however that our DC elected officials and elected rep (Eleanor Norton) who should be our first go-tos use that as a complete excuse not to demand, advocate and work hard towards better cooperation and public safety. As soon as a story like these appear, there should be a public follow up from them about how they plan to plug the 'oversight hole'. And then they should get going.
