I went to Carleton in the 80s and it was practically unknown on the east coast (although there were a number of people from this area in my class). Reed and Grinnell were even less known. Definitely not "hot".

DP. And parent of a HS sophomore, Alum of an East Coast college. So no skin in the game (yet) and not necessarily a Claremont cheerleader. But come on. Some years Harvey Mudd and Pomona have the lowest acceptances rates in the country-- Naviance is showing 14% last year for Mudd and 9% for Pomona. I would be thrilled if my TJ kid got into Mudd. Would love to send a liberal arts kid to Pomona. You need to want a small college. But if you do, they are very prestigious.

I don't remember them being a big deal several decades ago. But if you are talking about 2017? The accepted kids admission stats out of TJ are on par with Stanford. Credit where credit is due.

Liberal arts colleges in general were hot in the 1980s. Not so much anymore. Folks want more bang for their buck.

I grew up out west in the 70's and never heard of the Claremont Schools until more recently. Stanford and Berkeley were the stars out west. The seven sisters? Not so popular anymore. They are still excellent but not many college kids want single sex education anymore.

Wrong poster. I grew up in a suburb of Boston and graduated in 1982. Those were the hot colleges when I was in HS. I forgot Northwestern and Chicago.

For those who were around in the 1980s or before, what were the most desirable, selective, or reputable schools? How have things changed in recent years? Which colleges were unknown then which are extremely desirable now?
