I've never had enough money to leave the country. I haven't flown on an airplane in over 10 years because we don't make enough to buy tickets. I drive to vacation but at least I get one. I'm middle class, the poor have no vacations.

Kind of a silly title to this thread, since NONE of the people in that article article were living on $300k HHI. Most of the subjects mentioned had millions in inherited wealth.

The ones who were living off of wages were described as having HHI of $500k or so, from one earner - that's a somewhat far cry from a 2-earner HHI of $300k which has to account for day care, 2-commutes, housecleaning, etc.

I think that you can have a good debate about whether HHI of $300k is upper middle-class or pure upper-class, but this article doesn't really contribute anything useful to the discussion.

I make $80k. I think of myself as middle class. I go on vacations once every four years or so. I budget for two years to get a laptop. I buy my clothes on sale at Target. Not because I don't want to impress anyone, but because that's what I can afford.

These rich people can call themselves middle class if they want, but they aren't fooling anyone.

Inheriting millions of dollars with a 250k HHI is very different from someone with just that HHI.

The article discussed, inter alia, someone who inherited $50million dollars.

Don't feel alone. The affluent of NYC feel the same way. Millions, but just middle class (flying first class).
