You are both asshats. If you are going to bury water carrying pipe, with aim of discharging that water at a remote location, it should be schedule 80. If your aim is to perk the water into the ground, you can use black corrugated pipe wrapped in geotextile fabric, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you don't have suitable fall or emitting location for your discharge.

There is nothing wrong with also using Sch 40 PVC for drainage outside - it's not illegal and it's not going to degrade. The better product, from a cost/function perspective is the specific soil PVC that has thinner walls - it's lighter and cheaper, and comes with preformed bells at one end to make connections even easier. It will last forever and won't silt up unless improperly installed at a wrong grade (and then it's relatively easy to clean).

The corrugated black pipe is a disaster. It's hard to get it graded properly, it silts up, and it's hard to make proper connections. If you want to use it to save a few bucks, go ahead, but the expense is in the digging and grading, not the pipe.

Black corrugated pipe is designed for burial for certain applications. Extending downspouts is not one of them. Schedule 40 is designed for interior applications..? What do you think is used primarily as the main sewer drain in homes? Last I checked they run outside..

I hope you're just a homeowner. There are already too many shoddy contractors around here already, much less giving bad advice to clueless homeowners.

So as my above example pointed out.. Only a moron would install black corrugated pipe. That homeowner had to spend a fortune to dig up and replace the collapsed black corrugated pipe. That would NEVER happen w/ sch40 pvc AND you can actually snake sch40 pvc.. Only reason to use black corrugated pipe to extend downspouts is a lazy contractor.

Sch40 pvc is the way to go for buried drain pipes. Anyone who says to bury black corrugated pipe Id kindly say thank you and show the door. I remember the story my hardscape guy was telling me about a house in Mclean. Previous contractor buried the downspouts under the patio from the house next to the pool, and guess what happened? It collapsed and stopped draining. Only way to fix that is rip up sections of the patio.. So, by all means, if you want a half ass solution, use black corrugated pipe..
