If I had a child with a March who I seriously thought wasn't ready for K, I would have them professionally evaluated. Good luck.

I know someone who did basically redshirt March kids simply to get the kids into a specific program. I wouldn't unless there's a specific need as identified by a teacher. But I feel that way about August kids.

That being said, I have a cousin that had an April birthday and was held back....I am old......so he is old (born in 1985) before "redshirting" was as big as it is now.
It probably WAS the right decision for him. He had some learning disabilities, speech delays, and general immaturity.

Also, I know some kids that are more "recent" (born in 2006) with early spring birthdays that started "on time" for Kindergarten, but found they needed more time. They just repeated Kindergarten again and are doing just grand now.

My son has a March birthday and for k and half of first, I regretted not redshirting him. Mid year 1st grade, everything clicked into place and I am happy I didn't redshirt. It was a rough year and a half, though!

yes, too old to redshirt. Lots of on time Kers can't sit still for even 15min. I have volunteered in Ker classes.

OP, I know you love your DC, but seriously, relax. He will be fine. If kids with SN behavior issues can handle K without being redshirted, I think your's can, too.

Something to consider: my 4 year old will turn 5 in kindergarten next month. If this child you describe is held back, he or she will celebrate their 7th birthday in kindergarten. That to me sounds like a big difference.

Is this for a school year starting in five days, or are you looking ahead to next year?

It's a bit late for this.

I think you should send your child to school because either you're underestimating his ability to handle kindergarten or, if he's truly unable to handle kindergarten at that age, they may be able to identify for you that there's an issue that should be diagnosed and addressed (in which case being in the school system and getting services there is a good thing).

He'll adjust and be fine. Put him in a more structured preschool where he can learn to function in a classroom.

DH thinks it is but this kid is very immature (i.e. cant sit still for 30 minutes, slow learner) and no way will handle kindergarten.
