Well, I will object slightly. I live in District 1 (Laurel) and I'm pretty happy with our representative, David Miller. Before I had kids, David was a high school student who was on the BoE as a non-voting student rep. He was trying to change the system while he was still a student. He ran unsuccessfully twice losing by less than 1000 votes. He has finally been elected (I've voted all 3 times for him and I've never even met him). I don't always agree with his positions, but I find it refreshing that someone that young is that inspired, diligent and hard-working to strive to improve the system he was a part of.

I voted and talked others into voting for him because I did not like how our representation at the time was handling our school board. Most of the rest of the school board is just like Rosalind Johnson, the person who inspired me to support David. I agree that the rest should be voted out, but I like David Miller's work ethic.

We need to look at the board and the people in administration at PGCPS. Nothing will change unless we clean house in the administration and even in the schools. Notice how regardless of who is on the BOE or who is at the top at PGCPS, there are the same old problems?

Everyone complains about the schools. No one cares about the make up of the school board. But as DC becomes too expensive for Whites, they will flood the county and take over the school board. Right now, we really don't care and so when (not if) they come, we will expect a windfall and complain when their kids do well while ours do not.

I think we have to be more proactive when it comes to electing officials for the school board. We need several townhall meetings and require candidates to appear. Looking at the comments about PGCPS, i cant understand why we dont move collectively, like white folks do in DC.

People run for the board positions, and the old crappy members just win year after year. How do we get new people to win is my question, because we know that a lot of qualified people who would do a great job live in the county.

Totally. It's frustrating to be voting year after year for decent prospective board members (who actually have children in the schools!) and it not making a difference. In so many ways I love living in PG County, in others I'm so tired of the backwards politics.

Seriously. We have one of the largest boards in the nation, yet we're not really getting the value for our dollars. Why do we need 14 people, some of whom have no children, no advanced degrees, and have never worked as a teacher or principal? Shouldn't we vote out the elected members, and put pressure on the county executive to release all of his (and soon Her) appointments? Asking for a friend (who is tired of paying for private)...
