If you are in Maryland, ensure that your adult son is enrolled in the Community Pathways Medicaid waiver upon aging out of school.
The waiver is what pays for residential services. SSI will cover the "room and board" cost of care part.

If your son is higher functioning and maybe doesn't need 24/7 supervision, please look into the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes "Supervised apartment" program.

There is an organization in Gaithersburg called Community Support Services- I'd look into what they offer as well.

Look at the sticky at the top of this forum. Although the subject is bf age 18, many things apply for adults in terms of things like qualifying for group homes, etc.

Contact your local Arc chapter.

I'm interested in this, as well. My nephew (NoVa) has a constellation of issues that impede his ability to hold down a job and manage his meds, so he still lives at home at 29.

His parents are basically resigned to continuing this situation, but their concern is what will happen when they can't support/care for him any more. It would be so much better if he could transition to some sort of independent living situation while they are still able to help him make the adjustment successfully.

I always assumed my son would live at home when he ages out of school, but now that he is older (17), I am not sure what would be best for him. I still picture him living at home at least until he is 30 (and maybe forever) with a day program but I wonder what else is out there? He can't live totally on his own, but he does not need a group home or nursing home either. Is there anything in between? And how are these housing options paid for? With SSI? I am just starting to look into these things, but they are starting to worry me.
