Multiple rings then VM -- the person is either busy or is covertly ignoring the call.

So is there a way to get rid of the spammers? This morning I didn't look when I answered my phone. It was a recorded voice that was made to sound real (you know, "Hi, <giggle> This is Cindy Lou and I am calling about your credit card ..."). I said "Take this number off of your list" and hung up.
But then all day, perhaps once every hour or two, I've gotten phone calls from numbers I don't recognize BUT that have the same area code and pre-fix. Like, if my number was 301-878-5555, then the first call and all subsequent calls were from 301-878-5xxx. So I have been declining and then blocking but it is a tedious process.
Is there any hope? Any suggestions? TIA!
I've had to do that, too. Tedious, I agree. Hope I don't miss a real caller!
