We set up a reading/lounging nook underneath with a bookshelf, lots of pillows, etc. It's nice and cozy, and she loves it.

A lifetime, really, unless the adult is obese or has back problems.

BUT. I recent sold all my IKEA wooden surround beds because my fingers hurt too much changing the sheets. I bought IKEA mattress bases instead where you just plop the mattress on top. Changing sheets is now so much easier!

I know this is an older post but wanted to add for anyone that is looking for this info - we have been using the IKEA Kura as a loft for over a year now and I can't believe how sturdy it is! It doesn't look like it is the sturdiest thing but I am seriously impressed. I climb up in it every night with my 5 year old to read stories and I'm not small! I wouldn't jump in it or anything but I feel very confident being in it with her. We did add a thin sheet of plywood between the mattress and the slats so that may have helped. And we use a regular 7 inch thick inner spring twin mattress. It only leaves about 3 inches of rail above the mattress but that hasn't been a problem for my daughter. This bed should last her as long as she wants it!

My skinny 9yo uses his. It's a regular twin size mattress. We got a high quality foam mattress that is technically half an inch too thick (it's supposed to be max 6") but haven't had any problems. It's very, very sturdy.

We do have our 6yo on a foam mattress underneath and he likes it. You're not going to fit a desk under there tho. I can't even sit on the 6yo's mattress without hitting my head. For a typical 7yo I'd probably go the route of a real bunk bed and have him typically sleep on the bottom bunk.

We got it for DD when she was 2. She's now 12 and still loves it. I wanted to get rid of it and do some improvements to her room but she shot down that plan. I won't be surprised if she ends up keeping it until college.

We bought one a year ago for our almost 2 year old, but we put it the other way so it's just a regular twin (with a normal mattress). It seems quite sturdy like that.

I wouldn't get it for a 7 year old. We had it, and at age 7 DSS was still using it, but just barely. The problem is that the play area underneath is extremely small - you can really only crouch, and you can't put any chairs or anything underneath.

We've upgraded to a metal IKEA loft bed (sorry, can't remember the name) and at 11 he'll still be able to use it for a good long time.

We keep this in my 2.5 year old's room (he's still happily in a crib) but it's great for guests and I often end up falling asleep on it myself while reading to him.

We bought this for our daughter from Ikea. She has a small room and loved the idea of having sleepovers on the pull out. I love the drawers for extra storage. We ended up putting an actual twin mattress on the bed and never buying the 2nd Ikea mattress to pull out. I like that the Kura loft still fits a full mattress OR storage/play/desk area underneath. Other lofts seem to have built in storage or desks that would prevent a second full mattress on the floor. Any other recommendations appreciated!

I wish I could get rid of mine. We stopped using it when my DS was around 7. We never used the top bunk part and only used it as a regular bed but then the upper part got in the way so it got on my nerves. If you use it like a bunk bed you might have a different experience. It's sturdy though and the IKEA mattress seemed fine.

It is sturdy and great! But I have a 4year old that uses it. You may want the other one that is bigger.

I'd like to buy a Kura loft bed for my 7 year old DS. Small bedroom, and Kura would give us options for sleepover friends/cousins or storage/desk underneath the loft bed. He's somewhat tall for his age, but pretty slim and wiry. (I know that's vague; I have no idea of actual numbers for height and weight!)

My understanding is that it's a regular twin sized mattress -- same length and width, but just not as thick as a regular twin.

So will the Kura last as long as any other twin bed?

Also, a lot of my internet searching has yielded very positive reviews, but they were posted more than 5 years ago... is a newly purchased Kura still as sturdy as it was back in 2010?
