My daughter wants to join a swim team next summer - and that will mean paying for a pool membership.

PP here. I agree, which is why I'm not a member of a pool club. In Maryland, they have quite the history of excluding minorities.

I've been holding out on the pool membership, but every time we are invited to go, I regret not joining. We never end up going to the city pools, because of their hours/location/anticipated crowds. And my kids apparently don't get enough swimming in summer camp. Still, I hold out because of feeling that it's kind of a bougie thing to do.

Our pool membership is open to everyone. All you have to do is pay the membership. We can walk to the pool. For me to go to a county pool, it would be a 30 min drive.

We do all of the stuff you list, plus lots of pool time. The biggest draw for us is the swim team. Our pool has a great team, and it's a good fit for our daughter.

I don't understand what you mean by "gate yourself in." We make the most of the pool but it certainly doesn't limit us, socially or otherwise.

Kids like the pool, and it's a much more appealing option during the worst heat of summer than the zoo or a playground. A lot of the families from our neighborhood go to the same pool, so it's rare that we go and don't see someone we know to hang out with. It's a lot closer to us than the public pool we used to use and it's cleaner/calmer, I think because the lifeguards and supervisors do a much better job enforcing the rules at the private pool than they do at the public pool.

we invite friends to the pool and either order food or grill. Our pool allows alcohol too so it is nice to enjoy a couple of beers or a glass of wine while kids happily swim.

our pool also has food trucks come, has movie night, etc.

I live in Fairfax County and our public pools that aren't water parks are indoor pools. Plus, my kids can walk to the pool that we joined. Plus, sometimes we just want to relax at the pool and not go to a museum or the zoo or wherever.

We like to swim. We joined the pool.

We have all week to fit everything in. And I am not going to the zoo when it is 95 out. We usually go once or twice a week to the pool.

Because it's hot and it's an easy way to spend a hot afternoon.

The zoo or museums would be way too hot and probably crowded.

Public pools - eh, too many kids for me. Not sure about the people with kids.
