I have a friend who likes to text a lot, so sometimes I wait a while to text back just because I don't want to get into a long text conversation at the moment. I myself am an introvert, and if I have had a long day of talking to people at work, sometimes I don't want to engage with anyone except for my family, including texts. Believe me, I struggle with this side of myself all of the time and I often feel bad for not replying right away, but I need my time to recharge, and that includes taking a break from texting.

I have an acquaintance who will text me to ask for stuff, but if I ever text, she never replies. I feel rude not replying to texts so now I'm being passive aggressive and saying I'm busy and can't help, etc. Scrap texting those who can't be bothered responding (not talking about those who text back later when it's convenient).

Because I work hard for a living and can't respond to your 10th dog photo!

Don't be stupid.

You assume that people keep their phone on. I have gone weeks without my cellphone on.

If it's not an actual emergency, I don't expect an immediate response. I also check my messages a couple of times a day, unless there is an actual emergency.

I am not tethered to my phone. The alerts are turned off, so I won't be a nervous wreck and they won't disturb others.

And I have noticed that my extended family members, who seem to resent I am not replying to non urgent requests immediately, are the same people who ignored an actual emergency situation when I needed their help. So there is some passive aggressiveness on my part.

If I don't answer you it's because you or what you said don't interest me. It's pretty simple.

Sometimes I don't think I'm in a safe place to take my phone out. Sometimes I want to think before I reply and don't have time to focus on it. Then I might forget.

All kinds of reasons.

Honestly, I hate being tied to my phone and accessible to everyone at all times. I deal with it enough at work.

Sometimes it takes me a day or two to respond. If it's urgent, call and leave a voicemail.

It was not convenient for me to text back at that moment. Then, I've forgotten about your text and since it's not in my email I don't have anything to remind me about it.

Just because it was a convenient moment for you to text doesn't mean it's a convenient moment for the other person to respond.

Because I'm not married to my phone, so I don't necessarily hear the text ping.

No guilt here whatsoever.

Especially when they don't have the "read receipt" turned off. You know we know you saw it. Epitome of rude.

Is it some sort of passive-aggressive thing? A power thing?

I'm not talking about an inflammatory text. A very polite text. I think it's rude.
