I met them when we were in college so it was Mr. And Mrs. until we got married. It took a while to switch to using first names. Although I find I don't usually refer to them by any name in their presence - usually it's just referring to them to others where I use their names.

First names. I love them dearly but I have my own parents.

My mom does call my dad's parents Mom and Dad, but I think that started after her parents passed away. My dad's parents are pretty much the matriarch and patriarch of a huge clan on that side, all reasonably close. There isn't that closeness on my mom's side of the family, and her parents have been gone since I was a kid.

If mine had insisted, I would have laughed like they were joking and call them Bob and Mary anyway.

First names. I remember everyone in the family calling my grandparents Mother and Daddy when I was growing up. I don't know if I could marry into a family where MIL and FIL want to be Mrs. and Mr., I think I"d need to torment them by living in sin with their child, and maybe even having an ILLEGITIMATE baby or two.

Mine are foreign. There was a bit of a language barrier. I didn't feel right calling them by their first names. I called them by an honorific and first name together. Then, when we had kids and the kids started using terms for Grandma and Grandpa, I just started saying those, too.

Married 20 years. I've called my ILs by their first names, at their insistence, for over 25 years. So, that's easy.

I have elderly parents, born in the mid 1930s; their generation was considerably more reflexively formal. My father called his FIL/MIL Mr. and Mrs. Lastname, although he loosened up a bit and later in life called them by their grandparent names.

I often call my ILs their grandparent names now, too.

Although after children, they became Oma & Opa and MorMor and Poppop. I even started calling my parents Oma and Opa when my children were around.

This for us too. Our grandparent names are Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop and Granny and Coach. I actually call my dad Pop and FIL Coach now even when DS isn't around!

First names.

They try to get me to call them mom and dad, but no way. I have two parents, and no one will ever fill that role but them.
