Also, DH thinks we'll probably move before the kids reach high school level so we're not that interested in those zones at this time. What middle schools, then, should we be aiming for?
Also, how do advanced programs work in this area? DH and I were both placed in advanced programs from a young age. Not necessarily expecting that to be our kids, but there is a high likelihood they will be. Where I grew up, only certain schools had advanced programs and we had to catch special buses to those schools. It made it harder for my parents to arrange for after school care, etc. Just wanting to be aware of how it worked?
Talking about high school pyramids is an easy shorthand for an area. Look for elementary schools that feed into these high schools, not those high schools. It doesn't mean that your first grader will go to that high school, but it's an easy way to focus on some areas and not others.
In elementary school, advanced placement is only at certain schools and students are bussed there. They are called center schools, and they have both general education classes and AAP classes. Other schools only have general education classes, and some have what are called local level IV classes. There are pros and cons, and strong opinions, about all of these.
