They think/feel that praying IS doing something.

I think "praying for you" is just something people say. does anyone actually prays for someone else and continues to do it?

First, you don't know what anyone else offered.

Also, bone marrow donation is not a simple procedure like donating blood. It's done under general anesthesia. It's ok to decline that risk for a stranger.

What you should do is organize something for their family. You need to find out what they need specifically, then also do some research to figure out ways to help that she may not have thought of. Then send out a sign up sheet to those who work with her, and those who know her.

Maybe they also have issues they are dealing with?

While praying for someone is completely worthless, there's probably not much else they're willing to do, especially if they don't know her that well. Everyone has their own pile of crap to deal with.

An acquaintance of mine just found out her mother has leukemia. Her mother is only 61 and she is really crushed. We are not that close, but we both volunteer on a Board of Directors and mutually respect each other. She was so upset that she wrote the whole board asking for advice. I offered to take the test to see if I am a match for a marrow transfusion. Another person offered to help her with childcare. She took both of us up on our offers, so it is clear the need is there. Everyone else was like "praying for you". Really? How about actually doing something?
