The Ten Commandments
I am the Lord your God
You shall have no other gods before me
You shall not make for yourself an idol
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
Honor your Father and Mother
You shall not murder
You shall not commit adultery
You shall not steal
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
You shall not covet your neighbor's house
You shall not covet your neighbor's wife
I'm going to go with "don't murder" as the #1. I think it's ok to covet your neighbor's house every now and then.
#1/2. When I first remembered this, it accelerated my road to atheism. No god that truly existed would need to exort his followers to believe in him over other nonexistent gods. Such a god is obviously an insecure phony.

Now that I'm a mom, I have brand new appreciation for "Don't use the name of the Lord in vain"
How many times a day do I hear "mom! mom? MOOOOMMMM!!"" for no real reason.
I'm just imagining God up there hearing people saying "Oh my God" all the time and wanting to yell a good "WHAT? What do you want! Stop calling me if you don't actually mean it!"

None of those. I like the commandment that Jesus (and many other spiritual leaders) said was the most important. "Love one another". I did a sermon series on this topic several years ago. If you can truly love others -even those people who are very different from you- you fulfill all the commandments.

I'm going with thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
I see the natural extension of these words as a commandment to stand firm against the herd mentality when it attacks an individual or marginalized group. Most of the great evils in world history have involved humans bearing false witness against each other, sometimes through explicit lies and sometimes through the collective failure of individuals to stand up and speak the truth in defense of other(s) when prospective "witnesses" knew an evil was being perpetrated but couldn't get past their own fear of having the evil turned on them instead.

Subject: What's your favorite Commandment?
I'm going with covet. I think society at large, through laws and consequences, covers the big ones and religion doesn't really suppress people's desires to commit the big ones (murder, steal, adultry, false witness). Covet is really an internal struggle with being satisfied with what you have. Reminding me that there is a balance that should be maintained between attaining material things and focusing on intangibles like relationships.

Subject: What's your favorite Commandment?
I like no idols. Stuff like no murder and no stealing is covered just fine with laws. But remembering not to bow to idols, whether it be money or praise or anything else that stands in the way of what is best and holiest... i like that reminder.
