We always go to Florida in summer because we have family there. Beach is fine because there is usually a breeze and you can just get in the water to cool off. Florida kids go back to school on the 8th I think so you may have it all to yourselves.

Totally! My ILs live in Penacola, and I would have no hesitation going in August (I dislike going in December, though). It really doesn't feel much / any hotter than here, and the beaches are alway gorgeous and honestly never crowded.

My daughter lives in central Florida, she's up here visiting, she can't wait to go home and cool off a little!

Go. I used to live down there, as well. If you've never been to panhandle beaches, you have a real treat in store. White, white sand. The water will be warm. Great seafood places, too. It's going to be hot at any beach in the east.

I used to live in Florida. I wouldn't pick August if I had a choice of when to go (id much rather go anytime from February-may, or in October). In August the heat wouldn't be what would deter me so much as the crowds and tstorm/hurricane conditions.

When in August would you go? If you go after August 14 that would be better - lots of schools down there start that day.

Yes, because the beaches are nice. But it will be hot. Depending on where you are going, it may not be horribly crowded. Destin would be crowded, Panama City is crowded, but it sounds like you may be looking at someplace like WaterSound or nearby. A place like that shouldn't be too bad. Expect thunderstorms in the afternoons; that's almost daily this time of year. But we like to go to the beach in the AM and the afternoon thunderstorms provide a necessary break from the sun. Have fun!

Best time to go, imo. Went once in August and once in July. Water is so warm and it is beach weather. The question I always ask is, why go to the beach in the winter, unless you are a snow bird elderly person.

I'd go, there is usually a breeze on the beach and you can go in the ocean or pool when you get too hot. Make sure you have an umbrella or tent for shade on the beach. I haven't been to the panhandle but just returned from Palm Beach and while it was hot it wasn't unbearable. Plus it's not like you have to stay at the beach all day, there are other things to do!

We have the opportunity to meet my ILs in FL next month (a beach town not far from Panama City). When I mention this to anyone their reaction is, why would you go to FL in summer?? Is it really any worse than the boiler we are living in right now in DC?! I lived in South FL for a year and although yes, it was hot, there was a nice breeze off the water and regular thunderstorms to cool things down. I wasn't sure if the panhandle was similar? The forecast over the next week shows highs in the upper 80s and scattered storms every day. That doesn't sound that bad to me.....granted, I'd rather be in NE but it would be a relatively low cost trip as the ILs offered to cover the accommodations.
