I've never regretted it and I've painted several homes gray.

We painted our living room, and kitchen, and all hallways throughout the house, a very light grey--Benjamin Moore Paper White. You would think it was white except for the contrast with the trim. We like it. But, there are several rooms that are different colors--the dining room has a dark blue patterned wallpaper. First floor office is dark brownish grey. Upstairs bedrooms and all bathrooms are real colors (navy, yellow for kids' rooms, etc.) I think the light gray works as a neutral but I would be bored if EVERY single wall was that color.

I recommend a warm grey. Stay away from the cool grays. Edgecomb Grey by BM is great (but reads green in some light) and I also recommend Agreeable Grey by SW.

I'd stay away from Gray Owl, etc.

Hmm, seems like there is a Valspar shade of dame name that is more blue. This one (Hirschfields) is definitely gray.

OP, it's a beautiful color yet still neutral. Happy painting!

Wow, that gave me anxiety just looking at it. Very...varied, but I'd be agitated with that much visual stimulation that changes room to room.

That said: I don't want to be bored to tears, either. With gray I can at least go for a bunch of different colored accessories. With mustardy yellow the choices have been much more limited.

The color is called Cool Elegance. It is a lighter gray with a slightly cool tone, but looks like it will work well with our assorted trims and flooring (white trim along with medium-tone stained wood cabinets, very light flooring, natural warm colored stone with gray grout - sounds like an odd mix but the way it was executed by original designer of home makes it all work).

I remember walking in the front door of the house for a showing, accompanied by my mom. The first thing she said was "ignore the wall color!" Ha, it's been four years, I can't ignore it any longer!!!

First bit of advice - unless you plan on selling, choose the color you want, not what's in fashion.
Next, my stager had us paint the whole house bm classic gray a few years back before selling as we faced the same problem - every wall connected from the kitchen to the second floor hall. I thought I'd go crazy with one color everywhere. Well, I loved it. Due to differences in light from room to room and wall to wall, there were great shade variances that added depth and interest. Having one color provided a more calming feel to the space. And it really made the whole house feel cohesive in a way it hadn't previously felt.

Happy painting! I can't believe you lived with mustard yellow at all!

Get a color consultant or interior designer to help you with this.

We have a semi-open floorplan, and figuring out continuity issues was a problem. Our designer helped us choose a paint that was in the color scheme we liked with neutrals that flowed well in hallways and stair wells.

It was great.

What shade of gray? Most of my house is edgecomb gray and a couple of rooms are revere pewter. Happy with both and consider them pretty neutral. Most of our furniture is very neutral too so is works for us.

We have a really open floor plan (kitchen, dining, family room, stairwells up and down are all visible from from front door). Previous owner painted everything a mustardy yellow. We are ready to repaint. Will we regret it if we go with gray? Is it quickly falling out of fashion?

Also on the painting list and hard to separate from open stairwells: upstairs hallway, open floor plan basement. And we also need to repaint the master bedroom and an office (visible through glass-panes doors on main level) and another upstairs bedroom.

Advice welcome! We can't stand mustard walls anymore and are desperate to get this over with.
