I'm 60 and much prefer texting (and email) to voice. Real time voice is a pain. Having to drop everything when a call comes in. Phone tag. I'm glad voice has gone out of fashion. But I still call when more convenient.

That's just sad.

To OP, tell your friend you're not much of a texter, so you don't tend to text back right away or every time. A fair number of 20-somethings aren't big texters either. If she likes being friends, she'll get used to your ways. Reply when you feel like it.

Why are you putting pressure on yourself and creating an issue where there isn't one? Respond when you feel like it. The beauty of texting is that you can send a note when something pops into your mind. Sort of like mini emails. They don't demand acknowledgement or responses immediately. Phone calls, on the other hand, require both people to be available at the same time, require attention for longer uninterrupted periods, and are generally annoying to that age group. I think part of the problem with many text haters is they compare texts to phone calls, and they're very different, despite using the same device.

At your convenience, text her back and ask her to call you so you can catch up....at her convenience. I'm in my 50's and text a decent amount but only a quick question or a confirmation of something. It beats going into voice mail or disturbing someone.

Just respond when you can and when you want to. That is the joy of texting

I'm in my mid-40s and I have a good friend who is in her late 20s. I rarely notice a difference in our age, expect when it comes to texting. She texts very frequently. A funny story that happened at work, a meme, a random article she found interesting, a story about her kid. My other friends my age, we don't do this. Sometimes it will take days for us to get back to each other just because we aren't texting constantly. I don't find it annoying as much as the pressure to respond slightly stressful. I would rather her call and we catch up on all things she's texting during the week. I don't know how to bring this up with our hurting her feelings. She's truly a great friend.
