Why one earth wouldn't you just will the animal to a friend or family member, then donate all that money to help an animal charity like the humane society?

What a waste.

Because not everyone has family left, some friends are allergic and many humane societies kill pets if they are not adopted within a certain time period. Gotta know your humane societies.

Because a friend or family member doesn't want your pet or the associated costs.

This is usually what happens. The trust is simply to make sure that you aren't sticking that person with pet care costs. When the pet dies, the money goes to charity. If structured properly and currently funded, you can also get a sizeable charitable deduction while you are still alive.

I doubt OP is joking. An attorney in my firm recently did a will for a very wealthy person. I kid you not, she set aside 500K for care of each of her dogs (3 of them) upon her death.

Omg whaaaat. What is a doing going to do with 500 (...or even 5) k??

Yes, of course. My pets will be cast onto my funeral pyre long with the wife. They will thus demonstrate their virtue! And it's kinder, really. Their lives would have no meaning without me anyway.

I put provisions for my dog in my trust. Don't think a separate trust is necessary, sounds like a way for lawyers to gouge you even more.

I can do better than that. I will keep your money and eat your dogs.

This is pretty common. What would you do? Euthanize the animal? If you ask someone to pay for it, wouldn't it be nice to pay for that animal's care? When the animal dies, typically the trust pays the remainder to a charity.

Exactly what is wrong with this?

We created a will through Rebecca Gellar in fairfax. It included what should happen to our pets should we both die.

Any recommendations? Beloved pet who is ah, er essentially a proxy for a kid. Prefer Virginia if possible.
