Is it really just for meeting platonic friends?

Yes. There are a bunch of blog posts about it.

Bumble (the app best known for dating) has a friend's option. I haven't actually used it, but heard from a good friend who moved to a new city that it's been great for her.

Similar situation. You have to put yourself out there and join some activities. Be open to people who may be a little older or younger. I met a nice lady in a craft group I joined. She invited me to coffee with her daughter who is the same age as me and we hit it off. We have since met for dinner and I have met a few of her friends.

I thought this article was useful. It talks about the challenges of making new friends after age 30.

You can try Craigslist. There is a section for platonic relationships. I've used it for meeting moms.

You can try meetup.com, but I just read a blurb about friend finding apps: Hey Vina which is for women to make friends and Bumble which pairs you based on interests. They also listed Pets Amino, which help pet lovers meet up.

Never tried any but your question prompted me to look it up. Good luck!

Anybody ever tried one of these?

I'm new to the area and work a lot. I'm finding it hard to make friends as I'm the boss at work and it's not really appropriate and the parents at my daughter's school all seem to have built in friends and family around.
