If you CAN mediate do. But --and this is a huge but-- you can't mediate or coparent with someone with a personality disorder. You know if your spouse is capable of working with you for the kids' sake or wants "his/her way or you will pay"

There are many excellent divorce attys that range in price and area of strength and a search of the topic here (seems to come up regularly here) should provide plenty of names and info.

This is what a good mediator does for the fraction of the cost of lawyers. There are many issues that divorcing parents may not even think of. A mediator can do all that. Once the agreement is finalized, hand it over to the lawyer for review. Much cheaper than starting with the lawyer.
