There usually is a list in the summer info packet (available later in the summer), but there's no need to buy everything listed in advance, unless you don't mind excess school supplies. During the first week of school, individual teachers will tell their students what is required for each class.

My kids have never bought the PE uniform, but I think many kids do. PE teachers definitely want the clothes to be the right colors (navy shorts, white shirt, I think?).

That's not entirely true.
I've had 3 girls all go through NBMS & they've allowed them all to wear light grey shirts as well as white.

I remember complaining to the principal at our parent orientation for our first daughter, that pre-teen/teen girls who may not wear bras yet or worse wear a bra too small or the wrong style/shape for their body, that they should NEVER be subjected to wearing a white tshirt, every day, outside in the cold, in the middle of winter.
That combination could lead to an extremely embarrassing situation for girls who may not be secure yet with their developing bodies (especially since they have co-ed PE with pubescent boys with raging hormones & a maturity of an 8 year old).

Principal Sumner agreed & after discussing it with I assume his staff, I was informed that girls will be & have been allowed to wear grey ever since.

Although I'm not sure if they extend the same courtesy to the boys as well?

That's not the norm for NBMS families, unless the family is here with international affiliations already & are usually going back home / visiting family abroad.

Most kids from NBMS are usually at Wildwood or Old Georgetown pools all summer, with the exception of a week or two here & there spent at the beaches of Bethany, Rehobeth, Ocean City, etc or like the PP said, Nantucket, Myrtle Beach, etc.

The families from NBNS seem to be more down to earth, less showy & not extravagant / flashy with their spending.
I don't see much keeping up with the Jones's from parents & while they may live in Bethesda & are usually UMC, not many can just call out of work for the entire summer to travel around Europe with their entire family, unless part of that travel is work related.

I have 3 kids at North Bethesda Middle & all of their friends either belong to Wildwood swim club or Old Georgetown pool (which honestly makes it so much easier for them to see each other, since most of their friends belong to the same pool) or they frequent the local beaches in Maryland & Delaware. My kids have many friends & we don't know any of them that summer in Europe.

I dont know any NBMS students/families that summer abroad, unless their parentsb employment brought them to the US in the first place.

Most people I know at North Bethesda either go to Nantucket, Cape May or Hilton Head.

There are some international families who visit their families abroad. This summer we're broke and can't go, but otherwise we most definitely would have spent weeks in Europe. A little chalet on an alpine plateau... bliss.

Do NOT use the NB supply list wherever it is posted. It has been added to and added to over the years, with nothing ever taken off the list! Send your kid to school witb a binder, paper, pencils and pens, and wait for them to bring home a list for each class. Then pick up the items over the weekend after school starts. This will save you tons of money on unnecessary supplies!

If anyone is willing to field some more questions: Are backpacks not allowed during class? Will we get the list before school starts or something you get from individual teachers once the year begins? Do most kids buy the PE uniforms or just bring something from home? Thanks so much!

I'm not sure it's posted yet, but for what it's worth, I think different teachers will have different suggestions. Kids don't carry their backpacks during the day, so a big three-ring binder is often helpful (and I think it's been on the list in past years). This year we tried a zippered binder (we bought the Case-It binder), which lots of kids use, and it was very helpful containing stuff.

A few teachers may want a small spiral notebook or composition book. Otherwise, lots of looseleaf paper, pencils, pens, etc. We haven't yet needed the graphing calculator suggested for some higher math classes.
