I have a Kipling crossbody. For a travel bag I look for lightweight, security, roominess, and organization. This bag meets all of them.

I keep a small water bottle, guide book, tissue papers in it when I travel. The one I got is slightly padded, so sometimes I even throw in my DSLR, which has it's own soft case.

I use one of those Vera Bradley bags because they are washable and I am a confessed but unrepentant germaphobe. It has over the shoulder straps and is about 18" tall and 12" wide, like an old-school book bag. It has 3 pockets on the inside: one gets the cell phone, one gets the hand sanitizer and Neosporin and suntan lotion, one gets lipstick and a little mirror and a pen with a little notepad. In the main part I put a Pashmina for a quick cover-up if we are sight-seeing in a religious place, a roll-up visor, a back-up itinerary and copy of my Passport, and a small umbrella if it might rain.

I constantly use a big Longchamp Hobo I got on sale for $70 at the Frankfurt airport, but I see on a quick search that they are $150-200...

My second choice is a big Sherpani bag, which has a laptop sleeve but also enough room for diapers, Thomas trains, books, and the like. They hold up quite well (just don't get the beige one, like I did... ) Sherpani is the most underrated bag company, in my opinion.

I personally disagree, but that's what I was advised to get.

I carry a diaper bag if with kids and large purse if not. In addition to items here, I like to carry pens, sun glasses, a hat, and hand sanitizer.

I use a Fjallraven Kanken as my everyday bag and it's great for travel. It's small but can hold everything my toddler and I need: a change of clothes, a large pack of wipes, a few diapers, changing pad, a small first aid kit, snacks, a Kleen Kanteen for me, and a Munchkin spoutless cup for DD. There's a large zippered front pocket where I stash my phone, wallet, keys, a pen, and a sunblock stick. The small side pockets can hold a reusable shopping bag or an umbrella. The top handle can be snapped to the stroller handlebar for easy access. The fabric is waterproof and if we don't trash it, it's the perfect size to be a school bag for DD when she's a bit older.

How about a cell phone power bank? Chap stick.

I don't have distinctly different needs for a purse when I'm on vacation vs when I'm just running around town, but here's what I need:

Must zip closed so that things won't fall out if it's stashed on a car seat/under airplane seat/ in bike basket.
Must have multiple organizing pockets, interior and exterior
Needs to be big enough to hold wallet, keys, glasses, umbrella, water bottle, and sweater (at least)
Cross-body
Lightweight
Waterproof.

I also routinely carry: reusable grocery bag, emergency granola bar, lipstick, headphones, spare phone battery & usb, kid kindle

Sunscreen
Advil
Tissues
Gum
Motion sickness medicine

Are you with kids?

Small games to play to pass the time (we are a low-electronics family) like Set, Karma (these are little tins), paper and pens
a map! an actual map. sometimes you really need an actual map.

I use a tiny foldable backpack ($8 on amazon), a DSLR camera bag, and an ebags purse interchangeably.
