DH gets off at McPherson Square, so in some ways his metro ride would be an improvement, no need to change lines, just getting to the metro would take longer.
We're looking at FFX or Burke as well, but we're hoping to find something newer with comparable to space to what we have now and it just doesn't fit into our budget. We'd like to stick around 600k but could go up to 700k if we super stretched. I just really do not want to be constantly fixing up a house like we did this time around - I'm just sick of it. We like the idea of buying new construction if we can and Chantilly seemed to have options in our price range.

7:32 here - sorry, I just reread that your DH is downtown. I wouldn't want to do Chantilly to Downtown a lot. But he is out of country a lot it could be ok.

I would not move here if my job was downtown. It is not a great commute. My next door neighbor does it and it is wearing on her.
Lots of people in our neighborhood work in other points in nova. When we moved in, my husband worked in ashburn and I worked in lorton pt. It was a decent in between point then.
We're pretty happy where we are. We can walk to the shopping center up the street. We can walk to all 3 school levels. We can walk to the library and a few parks. Fair lakes, fair oaks, fairfax corner, Reston, Herndon, city of fairfax - all within a few miles. The airport is close. While I know people laugh at big box retail and chain restaurants, we're a suburban family with kids-name practically any of these, and we can get there in a short amount of time.
It's a nice area-it isn't the city by any stretch, but we can walk to a decent amount, the families are nice and the schools are highly rated.
Well, the airport is close. But proximity to the other places does not excite me.

Great for families. Schools are great too. I take the VRE or Metro into DC every day. It's 1.5 hours each way (including driving to station) but I have pretty flexible hours. Lots of family activities but restaurants are pretty bland in terms of selection. DW's job is in Sterling so it works great for us.

Dc will be a tough commute. I live close to chantilly, right across 50 in Herndon/oak hill area. Very happy to be zoned for chantilly HS. There are great small restaurants and it's a nice place for kids. Library is great. Suburban, but close to a lot.

It's kind of bland and out there, but there's quite a bit of diversity (mostly Asian and some AA/Hispanic) and Chantilly HS is an excellent school with a neat academy program that I'd take over any public in Arlington or D.C. Don't listen to the haters.
