All my friends that are accounting majors did part time when kids were young and went back full time when they went to school.

People were begging them to not quit and they made their own hours.

In accounting, you have to "pay your dues" before you get to the point of flexibility. When you are a junior audit associate, it's the opposite of family friendly. Your friends who were accounting majors probably got to the manager+ level before having kids, at that point things can be quite a bit more flexible.

I think this depends on if you are audit tax or advisory. Our tax staff has a decent amount of flexibility even at the associate level (work from home and part time). We also hired good number of seasonals for compliance season, many of which are full time staff opting for a part time option. I'm with a big 4 in the tax group.

Any advice on how to get into this? (I have an BA in English and a JD, but all my work experience is in law).

Some companies that have gone fully or largely remote:

Design skills are in high demand, so employers are forced to be flexible. I'd go for design skills.

Thank you. I plan on making a career change and I am researching various fields. I want a field that will allow for some flexibility so that I can volunteer in my kids' schools and be home when they are home. During the next few years, I hope to take online classes and possibly pursue another degree. Both of you have mentioned a few good options.

What career fields offer the most opportunities to work at home and/or part time? Would accounting be a good option?
