Unless they have changed things, I think you need to be under 5 to be seen in that clinic. Another place people have gotten evaluations done is Mount Washington Pediatric Clinic. They are hospital based and take insurance and have less of a wait time. Didn’t use them personally but have read good things here.

I called Children's for an Autism screening and was told the next appointments they are scheduling are in late March/early April. I've heard great things about Dr. Samantha Bender, https://www.samanthabenderphd.com.

I could list 6-12 mothers (including me!) who would say the money spent for David Black is the best money they ever spent. The report is top notch and he does an amazing job in IEP meetings and trial. I wish I had done it a year prior to when I did.

From personal experience, I'd say save your money on Dr. Black and go through your insurance through KKI or Children's for a neuropsych evaluation. He may not academically qualify for an IEP, but you need to re-ask for an IEP based on lack of social skills--these impact "accessing the curriculum."

What would be a worthwhile investment is the social skills group at Ivymount.

You aren't limited to the DC OSSE list you get from DCPS, but if you go outside it, the provide must agree to charge no more than what OSSE will pay.

Have you asked your pediatrician whether there are any developmental pediatricians they recommend? What about your insurance company--have you called to ask them if it is covered?

He needs a full evaluation, not just autism for educational and social.

Call DCPS' central office and ask for an updated IEE provider list.

I have an eight-year-old rising third grader who is not doing well in school (socially or academically), and, according to our doctor, should probably be evaluated for autism. His school psychologist evaluated him and found that he is not eligible for an IEP, but suggested a handful of places where we could get an independent evaluation, authorized and paid for by DCPS. The problem is that four out of the seven places DCPS has referred us to no longer have working phone #s and I have not been able to get a human on the phone from the other three. Does anyone have recommendations on how to specifically get an autism evaluation? Do I need to go through Kennedy Kreiger or are there independent psychologists who accept insurance who might be willing to conduct the evaluation? Thanks in advance for any guidance/suggestions/recommendations.
