Woodridge, Michigan Park, North Michigan Park.

Brookland is hip but gets a little more crime near the Metro.

We live in Woodridge and consider it "safer" compared to where we used to live in NW. We live in a much quieter neighborhood. I can have kids play in the fenced in backyard and never have to worry. I have never had a package stolen (cross fingers). However, it is still in the city so the area is not 100% crime-free. Some areas are better than others.

15:37 here. I live in NW in Brightwood Park (North Petworth) in a "green zone" on that crime map and have never had a package stolen, let alone anything else more serious. I work in NE Capitol Hill and there is definitely more street crime there. The same can be said for around any commercial corridor in any DC neighborhood though. The NE neighborhoods I mentioned DEFINITELY are not hip, with possibly the exception of Brookland depending on your definitely of hip, but they're safe enough where I don't worry about physical safety for my small kids, break ins, or property theft. The loitering teens in my neighborhood litter and act rowdy toward each other, but are very friendly if you say hi and so are the adults in their household. It's a city neighborhood, of course it's not "front door unlocked while being bucolic and tranquil". I don't think that's the standard that most city dwellers are looking for though.
(pp who said you nailed it) Agree. People need to realize that there is often more street crime around bar and restaurant districts than there is in working class neighborhoods that look sketchy but are actually safer with regard to muggings, which is my greatest concern.

I think is safe to say that someone who asks about "safe" neighborhoods has a low tolerance for street crime, since that is the primary form of crime people think of when they call a neighborhood unsafe. Sure, burglaries are terrible as well, but they happen in the fanciest neighborhoods because criminals will travel there occasionally for lucrative targets, but no one would call those affluent neighborhoods unsafe for that reason. It's street crime - muggings, drug dealing, gangs - that make a neighborhood unsafe.

These responses are absurd. There are plenty of quiet, safe, family neighborhoods in NE. Not public transportation friendly and you may have brown people as neighbors, but if you drive/telecommute and aren't racist, then you have plenty of options. I know people who live in Fort Totten, North Michigan Park, Michigan Park, Brookland, and Woodridge and none of them have issues with safety.

front door unlocked while being bucolic and tranquil safe, not many. Less vagrants and being able leaving your car unlocked and not losing all the change in your ashtray every time, there are a couple off the beaten path.
