No. I have a cousin who is a great guy when he is on his meds but who doesn't want to be on meds. His SO has been with him for nearly 20 years through ups and downs and some serious scares. I am not made for it.

I have bipolar and I married someone with ADHD. My treated mental illness is less disruptive to our family and marriage than his untreated mental difference. (He agrees.)

That's funny because you sound like you have an undiagnosed mental illness . One of your kids probably does or will so I guess you don't want them to have love or happiness either.

1. No if it's one that's difficult to treat. No if the person is not on top of their treatment.

2. Mental illness traits are heritable, so be aware of that for future children.

If you are planning on children mental illness of a parent can be tough.

But I wouldn't marry someone with narcicissm. Schizophrenia, or who is bipolar or a sociopath.

If the person has a history of depression and/or anxiety in their twenties, I would run.

Mental illness? Maybe. I can tell you I definately wouldn't marry someone small minded who uses ignorance to stigmatize an entire group of people.

Depends. Was it something like anxiety that the person controls with meds? That would be okay. If it was very serious and the person had a history of not treating it, that would be a deal breaker for me.

Depends on what and how severe. Mild anxiety? Sure. Borderline personality disorder? No.

Depends.
How long have they been dagnosed?
Do they take care of their health?

I have a friend with a diagnosed mental health disorder, she's had the diagnosis and been in treatment since her 20s. She met her husband about 5 years after diagnosis. She takes care of her health, she sees a counselor, she takes her medication.

She's a great mom anf wife, and has a succesful career. She is very open bout the fact that she's doing well in life because she takes care of her health.

No it's a life long battle and affects many parts of the relationship. I grew up with mentally ill family members.

Is mental illness a deal breaker for marriage?
