Her poor brother. He will forever be haunted by that image and will likely blame himself/always wonder what he should have done differently

This is so sad for all, including the train operator who hit a child through no fault of his or her own. We should all take a lesson from this and not walk on tracks. You cannot hear a train approach within enough time to react and the train does not have enough time to stop when the operator sees you.

Poor child. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

OP here -- the orchestra director sent an email out to parents and students. His email said in part, "Please know that our counselors, administrative staff, and crisis counselors are available to speak with you here at school should you feel the need to talk with someone."

A memorial tribute is also in place on social media.

I agree about contacting the school. The psychologists and social workers often have extended contracts (at least I hope that is still true). They are excellent resources.

District offices may be a better place to call.

OH no. I hadn't heard about this. So sorry. I wonder if the school is able to provide any crisis resources during the summer.

My 7th grader was friends with the girl who was hit by the VRE train.

Any suggestions for how I can help my child and friends cope with this tragic loss?
