He's not 14, he's 24. He moved out.

He's 24! I would hope not.

The last two weeks of packing up to be gone for two years are chaotic- my childhood bedroom was a wreck as I sorted through what I would take a leave before Peace Corps. Tell him that he needs to leave the room clean of his stuff, with things he wants saved boxed and in your basement. Otherwise...off to goodwill (though if he does leave a mess and you see things that you know are precious...box them up for him, just because you love him).

Why not be direct with him? Tell him to pack everything up and store it in the attic or basement because you need the space for your grandkids. If he is heading into the Peace Corps he must be a decent kid even if he might be a slob.

Umm I was in the Peace Corps for two years. If he can't pack up his stuff before he goes I have a hard time imagining he'll be mature enough to last.

Sorry...

Why can't you just ask him to pack up his stuff? Not sure what the problem is.

Buy some boxes and tell him it all needs to be labeled and boxed up before he leaves.

Can't you just say - Johnny, you're leaving for 2 years. Pack up your stuff so we can use the space while you're gone?

He moved back home in March when his lease was up and leaves in two weeks for Peace Corps. He will be gone for two years, at least. He has taken over our bonus room, which I would like to use for grandkids His stuff is everywhere and he leaves in two weeks. How to get him to clear out and pack up?
