There's also a number of people who homeschool and an innovative homeschool STEM program for older elementary plus.

The kids in town go to all different schools. Mine go to Christian Family Montessori (pk-6) in Petworth. There are usually a couple new families from Cheverly entering CFMS each year. We all carpool. There are also public specialty schools your child can lottery into (music, language immersion, montessori) and charters. Spellman has a great PTA & new principal. Despite all going to different schools, the kids do make neighborhood friends. There are many families with young kids here and lots of family-oriented activities.

Exactly!!!! I can't imagine leaving our village (I know it sounds corny but it is totally true).

Middle school options:
Kenmoor, Audition for Hyattsville or Pullen, lottery for CMIT, administrative transfer to Tasker or Ogle.
Or private for 2 years. Spellman is K-6.

It is currently almost impossible to get a spot at the Kenmoor middle school TAG program unless you have attended Highland Park TAG program in 5th grade. Just FYI. That may change next year as more TAG spaces are opening up at the new Bowie Middle school TAG program. There aren't a lot of other good public school options for middle school unfortunately. There are a few charter middle schools (Chesapeake Math and IT, College Park Academy) but their track record is still hit or miss.

Cheverly 8th graders can apply to Parkdale High School IB program as well as to Roosevelt Science and Tech. Roosevelt is exam based (PSAT 8/9) and grade based for entrance which Parkdale IB is more of an application process with letters of recommendation and statement of purpose etc.

There's also the Academy of Health and Science, a dual enrollment program with PGCC (but very hard to get into because it is so small and lottery based)

We also have a rising kindergartener and are planning on sending him to Spellman. I have no concerns about it, especially in the younger grades.

Elementary: Spellman

Middle: Audition for Hyattsville, or lottery into TAG program at Kenmoor.

High: Take PSAT 8/9 for a chance to get into the S/T Program at Eleanor Roosevelt.

Local middle and high schools aren't all that great.

We send our children to Spellman and have had a very positive experience for 4 years. The kindergarten staff is outstanding and all 4 teachers are great so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend sending your daughter there in the Fall. The Principal is very dedicated and is making a lot of positive changes in the school. The PTA facebook page is pretty active so you could probably reach out to them if you have questions.
A lot of people lottery into Dora Kennedy, Hoyer, and Chavez.
People who decide to go private mostly choose St. Ambrose, Friends School and St Jeromes. There was a large contingent of families going to Christian Family Montessori but the numbers have gone down since the school moved further away.
