At our school, the "safe" room is a place where we can take a child to keep him or her safe while we sort out an urgent situation. Usually related to custody when parents or guardians are on site and acting in an unsafe manner--arguing with each other, making threats to one another, making threats about the child, etc.

Not sure about schools, but we have safe zones at work. I work at a hospital and each unit has safe zones.

They can be locked from the inside and not accessed from the outside. They either have bullet proof glass or a door that would protect us.

Some of these safe rooms have a window that can be opened.

I imagine that a schools safe zone is a locked area where the attacker couldn't gain access to. Probably not staffed, but staff has been trained on how to use it.

I just heard from my neighbor that our local high school has safe zone.
I've heard this term in the media relating to these spots being on college campuses, but I don't really get what there all about. What are kids being kept safe from and who staffs these places? How would this work in a high schooll?
