My husband was a 3rd gen legacy and my ILs are active alumni, so I am guessing they'll brainwash one of my kids into at least applying.

I do think that if money isn't the issue, this was a discussion that should have occurred prior to applying.

I guess OP's point is that sometimes parents don't just want to get something for their kid just because they can afford it. Like, I guess I could afford to buy my kids expensive designer clothes, but I think that's a stupid waste of money, so I won't. I'm sure there are parents that feel that way about elite colleges.
Honestly, I'd feel that way about some private colleges that are not HYPS .... that they are very expensive and I'm not clear that they provide value over state schools. I do think that the elite level schools do provide a value, so I would pay for them if I could afford to and it was a good fit for my child. Everyone draws their own line at what they think is a waste of money. That's fine.

But the likelyhood of that happening, even if he is a great student, is extremely small, so I'm not going to waste my time thinking about it
