I think a little of both. UVA is no longer a safety school for TJ students and now accepts less than 2/3 of those who apply from TJ (still a very high %). This class was also considered not as strong as the previous 2016 class which had 81 going to UVA.
That's wild, because my understanding from talking to a co-worker whose kid recently went through the admissions process is that getting into TJ itself is a much, much more competitive and high-pressure thing than it was back when I went there. My own kids are in preschool so I haven't really focused on this, but it really brings home for me how much more competitive
everything is for teens now. I'm not looking forward to what it will be like for my kids in 10 or 15 more years.
