Unlike the top PP, I am not a troll (fantastic catered reception indeed). However, we actually did have 2 guest speakers -- somebody from the American Legion, and the principal of the middle school.

It's a little ceremony for the fifth graders, who have now finished elementary school and are going on to a different school next year. Balloons, a few speeches, maybe a slide show, lots of parents with teary smiles taking pictures.

They still care about perfect attendance? Stupidest "award" ever and has nothing to do with intelligence or hard work. As if it's anyone's fault they get sick and have to stay at home!

Our was lovely but so ridiculously hot that it was almost hard to enjoy. They had opening remarks from the principal, a parent presented the 5th grade gifts, an adorable slideshow was shown, kids walked across stage and said their favorite memory while their baby and 5th grade pictures were displayed, then a couple of songs and it was over. It was probably an hour and 15 mins, so not bad but just soooo hot! (It was also on Tuesday when it was a sauna out...). Oh- and no individual awards or anything were given. Very nice evening!

Ours had a slide show of each kid's kindergarten and 5th grade picture (or whatever year they first came to the school), a guest speaker, the principal spoke, a few academic awards, a cute song, and everyone coming up to get their certificate. It was very nicely done.

My child's school (Fairland) didn't have one.

At our school, recognition of teachers, staff, parents, students, then three speeches from kids (reading stories they wrote in recent months), whole class sang a couple of songs, students received their certificates (individually, walking across the stage like at a graduation), then a slide show and out. Cake afterwards.

I am curious about what your elementary school did for promotion and how it went? Who speaks? How are kids recognized? What does the Principal do? Is there a slideshow? etc. I have a rising fifth grader and am wondering how things are done.
