OP, I guarantee you will look back on this post in a year's time and laugh your head off, partly because if you join the PTA and get involved, you will be EXHAUSTED right now.

Relax. School ended last week. There are weeks and weeks of summer to come. Many PTAs are transitioning leadership right now. School waitlists are still in flux. Give the PTA volunteers a break for just one second.

If you haven't heard anything by August, plan something yourself - I don't have a lot of sympathy for a parent, even a new one, whose attitude is that someone else should put in "that little effort."


+1. New parents that assume their priority is everyone else's are ridiculous. You realize the last day of school (at DCPS) was June 14, right? Calm down. Pace yourself.


New parents are used to the daycare service model where the parent is a customer. They are also really excited about their kid starting school! Give them a break too- you just forget how eager and nervous you were back in the day.

The whole beginning of school is about acclimating students into the school / class, getting to know classmates.

It's really not a big deal if these events don't happen over the summer.

2-Get used to this. You can't expect the PTA to do everything immediately and on your timeline, unless you're willing to offer to help.


+1 The PTA is not a full-service customer-oriented company. It is a group of volunteers that now includes you. If you don't want to do something, don't expect others to do it for you. You don't get to complain if the PTA doesn't do something, because if you want it to happen, you need to make it happen.

Usually the PTO/PTA/families association organizes, but if you want to be the planner, just email them and volunteer.

I'm a PTA president at a charter. We organize several as a PTA during the summer, but I'd welcome a family emailing and offering to help coordinate one.

This! PTA is a group of volunteers. You want something to happen - you volunteer to make it happen. PTA can then help you to spread the word etc.

This! PTA is a group of volunteers. You want something to happen - you volunteer to make it happen. PTA can then help you to spread the word etc.

We do them but if parents didn't volunteer to organize them, they wouldn't happen. As above, it's just a set time on the playground. We usually bring snacks and a table; people from the neighborhood often come by and talk too.

Wondering if this has to be self organized or is typical at a charter - I'm wanting my daughter to have a few familiar faces when she enters PK3 at a new place with none of her friends.
