If you need something engrossing that isn't total fluff, The Tea Rose is one of my favorites. It's historical fiction. I've recommended to many people and all of them have loved it.
If you want a psychological thriller, I've recently enjoyed Behind Closed Doors. Also The Couple Next Door.
I like Sarah Pekkanen for lighter books with some substance. Also Taylor Jenkins Reid. Diane Chamberlain is similar to Jodi Picoult. I've loved most of hers. The Secret Life of CeCe Wilkes, The Midwife's Confession and The Bay at Midnight are two of my favorites of hers.
I'll echo what others said about the Kindle Paperwhite. I take mine everywhere I go. I can't imagine traveling with actual books now that I have an e-reader.
