Patel Brothers doesn't have a display case, though right? I thought they sold Shiney's. There's also Anarkali Bazaar in Beltway Plaza that also sells mithai from Shiney's. It's pretty fresh.

I say go straight to Shiney's or Nirala in VA to pick out your mithai. I find Nirala easier to navigate to, although Shiney's has better savories in addition to mithai.

For great Indian desserts in Maryland or D.C., check out Patel Brothers on University Blvd for fresh mithai like ladoos and gulab jamun. Shiney's Sweets in Annandale is also highly recommended for a variety of sweets. If you're looking for online store for home delivery something check on Quicklly for online sweet stores.

Costco has ras malai but it is not South Indian.

In this area I have only seen fresh sweets in quantity around Diwali. The shops in NJ/NY are better stocked year-round. I have learned to make Mysore pak
and Kaju barfi. Not venturing into ladoos though!

Sukedhias from Chicago is a good suggestion. You can also buy ladies at the temple in lanham.

You may want to just order restaurant take out.

If you want a good quantity and variety, you'll have trouble in Langley Park.

Try the halal store next to India Sari Palace; they may have some fresh sweets in their fridge. Actually Patel Brothers would probably have it too, I just haven't been there in a long time.

Another option is Indus Foods on Route 1 near the old Laurel Mall (900 4th St, Laurel, MD 20707)

But the best sweets would be from Shineys!

I'm Indian, though I don't really like Indian sweets LOL. I've seen different kinds of fresh mithai at Patel Brothers on University Blvd (at Riggs). Don't know whether they are any good or not. Haldirams makes ok, but not great, packaged versions of some sweets (soan papdi, rasgulla). You can also order some of the less perishable kinds from Sukhadia's online store (like laddoos)
Some Indian desserts are easy to make at home from scratch - like gajar halwa, kheer. You can make decent gulab jamuns too from one of the mixes (also available at Patel) or with a recipe that uses dry milk powder.

Can anyone (preferably South Asian food experts ?) tell me where I can buy great Indian desserts like ladoos and jilebi, gulab jamun, etc. . Preferably in Maryland or D.C. There must be some places on Univ Blvd right, but the restaurants that used to have desserts for sale at the counter seem to no longer do that.
