Same here. Our child was self-taught when it came to Java, so it was useful to be taught in a formal setting to learn efficient code. Kind of like the situation where many people can decorate a cake OK, but it takes training to make it look really good!

Whatever level they teach isn't enough to make them truly knowledgeable in Java or any comp sci concepts. They are left with a lot of holes in their knowledge not knowing several key concepts, and this is fine, because these courses are supposed to be introductory, even the post-AP courses. The real learning still happens in a professional setting.

The regular CS class is perfectly adequate preparation for AP CS.

Would like to hear from parents of TJ kids who took up Foundations Comp Sci Course Accelerated option with Python / Java instead of the Foundations with Java alone. The course description says it is intended for those with 1 year experience but not ready for AP comp sci direcctly, instead is a better preparation for AP comp sci course than the base course.
