Riddle me this...

I once worked at a company where I received yearly reviews below the average. Survived multiple layoffs where the ones who were laid off were far more talented than I. Was I just cost effective (doing acceptable work but paid less compared to peers)? The company used stack ranking.

I was in a similar situation: I told my manager I was pregnant two weeks before I was let go. I did not accept the standard severance package and negotiated for additional paid leave and benefits.

I used a lawyer and just the threat of a maternity discrimination lawsuit enabled me to negotiate to get what I wanted.

Time to call a lawyer.

They likely planned on terminating you before you announced your intention to take leave. Your supervisor knew HR wouldn't let him/her term you once you'd submitted your leave request. While you may have a case just on the timeline, it's likely they've documented your less than stellar performance. You may be able to get some settlement out of them, but you probably don't have a strong case.

I am just flabbergasted reading this. There is definitely something there. Document the outline in your OP and get a lawyer.

And, as much as you can, be glad you don't have to return. It sucks to be without a job, but at least there's a better future in that than returning to a shitty job with shitty people.

History:
Been with the company for 10 years. 8 consecutive years received average performance reviews. 9th year requested maternity leave and was away for a few months. That year received my first below average performance review and placed on a pip. 10th year boss knew I will be away for my second maternity leave and he suggested to wait a day or so before submitting the request. At that time, did not think anything of it. Next day was informed I was being laid off. Just was wondering if anything is there, whatever it may be.
