Thanks. It turns out she's going to be one of the interviewers so I'll just wait to speak to her next week at the interview.

You can still contact her. I would. "Dear so -and so, it was so nice to meet you the other day at the such-and-such reception. I just wanted to let you know that after we met I was interested to learn more about your organization and was pleasantly surprised to see you had an opening to do this and that. I ended up applying, and turns out I will be interviewing on May xxth. I look forward to learning more about your organization and chatting more with you then. Thanks so much."

OP here. Because sometimes the person is not actually a great fit for the position and that adds a whole other level of awkwardness to turning them down. Sometimes it works out well. I'm never an asshole to the person sending the email.

If you're hiring, I would think you would want as much contact with potential employees as possible. Easier to weed out the bad ones.

I work in a decently small industry. Those of us in this field in this city tend to know each other or at least know of each other.

I was at an event yesterday where I spoke to someone who works at an organization I would like to work for. We had some things in common and she ended up asking me a bit about my background. I went home and looked up their jobs page and saw a position had just been posted that I would be qualified for.

I put together materials and applied last night. I know I will see this person again in a month at an industry conference.

Should I email her to say it was nice chatting with you and oh by the way I just applied to the open position (it would be same level as her)?
Would it be more awkward to see her at the conference having emailed and not gotten the job?

I know when I'm hiring I sort of hate those emails, but I also know they can help make sure your application does not get lost in the mix.

What should I do?
