OP here.
Really? It's a heavy (Pottery Barn) item.

Thanks for your feedback!

The larger drywall anchors should indicate how much weight they can hold on the package.

Don't use drywall anchors. The pull from this mirror will be down and you want to spread the weight over as much drywall as possible, not just the 1/4" for a screw. You are much better off getting heavy weight picture hooks, which will be for weights up to 50lbs each. Get two (which you should do anyway for anything bigger than 8x10) and nail them into wall.

That said, the best approach if this is heavy is the idea of screwing a thin board to the wall, with the screws going into studs, and then using that to hang the mirror from.

Just go to Home Depot and get some drywall anchors. They can easily hold up to 80-100 lbs or more without using a stud.

We have this! Have hung it two ways - first time was with picture wire and screws in 2 studs (easier to level). Other time we used heavy duty drywall anchors. It isn't that heavy - as long as you're not pulling on it those anchors will hold it fine.

Love that piece - used the cubbies for phones and random gift cards and whatnot.

This is the "real" way to do it. Basically , if you have no stud, make one.

Get a board and screw two or three screws from board into stud. Attach to that board.

At least one hole should be in a stud of possible.
You can screw in a cleat, a 1x2 piece of wood length of the mirror and attach to the studs where they end up. Then hang the mirror on the cleat.

I thought about the wire, but the studs are so that the wire will either be extended beyond the mirror (too wide) or figure out how to jimmy something in the existing holes to hang from too narrow a wire.

Use picture wire and into a stud. Too heavy and could fall. They make things for the wall that claim to give enough support but drywall is not very sturdy. If it is plaster it may be ok.

I have a heavy mirror that has holes in the back (to hang on nails/hooks) that are an odd 22" apart.
Any recs for how to hang this up?
TIA.
