Most charters allow it; if they do it is listed as a preference on the school's profiles in MSDC.

DCPS does not.

If / when rules about boundaries or preferences change, students who were let in under previous rules can stay. Same for kids who get in under a previous chancellor's discretion.

To add to my post, obviously teachers should be district residents. I don't mean for out of district teachers.

I think it's silly that students can't go to the schools their parents work at unless they get selected in the lottery.

I used to teach in a suburb (school was not under capacity) and parent teachers were allowed to have their children at their school if the principal agreed.

It was a huge boost to the teacher morale and family feeling of the school.

When did this rule change happen? My kids go to a WOTP elementary school and a number of teachers' & aides' children & grandchildren have attended who live OOB. Also the principal's two children currently attend from OOB.

I don't have a problem with it. I think it's a nice benefit for people doing a hard job with low pay relative to the cost-of-living in DC. But, the Kaya "scandal" confused me, because I thought preferential treatment for teachers & staff children was permitted given the stats at my kids' school.

Wrong. It is no longer allowed. Teachers must live in DC and enter their children in the lottery like anyone else if they want to attend as an OOB student. DCPS does not offer a teacher/staff lottery preference.

I know of at least one teacher who did get great lottery luck for the OOB school where she taught, so it is possible that is part of the confusion about why some teachers get to send their kids to their school.

No. The rule would only be written if it were 'allowed' to outline the procedure and any limitations.

See this thread from last year with teachers who were seeking OOB preferences and couldn't get them. One said she was lobbying DCPS and others asking for a policy change. Still a lot of confusion and suspicion that some principals are finding ways around the rules.

There may be children 'grandfathered' in from when principals had more discretion.

To get in now outside the lottery rules you'd need a Chancellor's placement.

Sometimes a Principal will allow some teacher's kids in and not others. Difficult to understand. Stinks of favoritism!

There is a ton of inconsistencies on this issue. I don't know the rule for Principals. However, a principal at a school decides which teachers living OOB can send their kids to the school the parent works at.

If they live OOB can they still send their kids to schools they work at? Is it automatic or does it have a lottery preference?
