+1. Like your doctor or their spouse. Your neighbors' kid. The vice principal at your kid's school. The tech guy in IT at the office. Your finance guy. Believe me you know somebody.

What I don't understand is what drives a person to actually try heroin in the first place. Besides an addiction to opioid pills. When I was in high school everyone smoked pot but it seemed that no one would ever EVER go near a needle. What's changed? Are kids that depressed and desperate?

My daughter (17) has two friends with older siblings (in their early 20s) who've OD'd just since January.

My neighbor's son in his early 20s left college after the fall semester due to depression from having 6 friends, 2 very close, OD in about a 6 month period. He's doing better and will be going back to college this fall, but I saw them leaving the house dressed up last Thursday morning and found out they were going to another funeral for a family friend who'd OD'd.

A co-worker's brother OD'd last fall. He'd been in and out of rehab for nearly two years trying to battle his addiction.

All of the stories are so sad.

My kindergartner's teacher left for two weeks because her brother died of an overdose in April.

Yes. Know several people from high school on both coasts (moved mid-HS) who have died, and even more who are addicts or are in recovery. Dozens.

Well, my boyfriend works in harm reduction, as do many of his friends, and many of them are former users, so .... yes.

Not mine, however my early 20 something children have friends who OD'd
