That's funny. I have 2 BCU graduates on my team. Both are energetic and very smart. They are also both willing to say what is on their mind when it is for the good of the team. I would rather have those type of people working with me then those just go along to get along.

But that is only part of the point. TBH, if you or anyone thinks it was appropriate to speak at THIS commencement at THIS time, it is the embodiment of the tone-deafness that the OP talks about. The students themselves were disrespected by her invite (over their strenuous objections). Yet, you expect THEM to show the respect that they themselves did not get.

A few years ago, the Johns Hopkins Medical School graduates were protesting that Ben Carson was invited to be the speaker at their graduation. Ben Carson, weird as he is, agreed that it was the graduates day and declined to speak.

I think it is awful for the college to have asked her to speak in the first place and applaud the students for standing up and turning their backs on her. I have never been a fan of booing.

TBH, I would have been disappointed if the students had been silent and otherwise complicit with this $hitshow.

1. DeVos has, through her acts and words, made it her mission to undermine the public education in this country. A lot of these students are products of that system. Besides that, BCU is known for producing public school educators.
2. In her remarks leading up the ceremony and her speech, she showed a profound “tone-deafness” of Mary McLeod Bethune (the founder of the school) – who she was, what she stood for and why the school was so important to her.
3. Finally, the students chose someone else to be their speaker. The president of the school overruled them to invite DeVos. It was the students’ day and he ruined it because he wanted to pander to the administration.

Just tone deafness all around. A damn mess!
