It makes it more difficult for OOB families. That makes it politically untenable. So, the downside is political unpopularity on a citywide basis.

If the merger resulted in the retirement of the Hardy old guard (the protectors of Hardy's 'unique DC culture'), then I would be all in favor. Overlay Deal standards and quality on Hardy's smaller school environment and that would be one heck of a school.

The problem is geography. A large number of Deal students live within walking distance to the school. My house is about 1/3 of a mile from Deal and getting to Hardy would be a huge pain in the ass.

My school district did something similar where/when I was growing up. All (or most) of the 6th graders in the district went to the same school. Middle school was 7th and 8th.
