In the late 80s, AU students protested until AU divested from any financial interest or dealings with the then-Apartied government of South Africa.

When Georgetown students attempted similar protests, they were immediately arrested, ejected from campus, and threatened with expulsion.

AU is not racist, does not tolerate racism, nor does it have many racist students.

The only racism I witnessed on campus back then was a scattered low key hatred between the few Israeli students and fewer Gulf state Arab students - and even that was limited to crude graffiti scribbled on the toilet stalls in the basement of the SIS building.

I heard at one point that an AU frat, as part of its initiation rite, has pledge prospects relieve themselves on Marion Barry's grave. At first I dismissed it as a nonsense rumor, but now who knows?

American University (and all other universities in the United States) is a microcosm of the greater community. There is racism EVERYWHERE, it is in the very DNA of this country and at the very core of EVERY institution. If you think for a single minute that your racially mixed community and your socially progressive neighbors aren't harboring racist beliefs and biases... think again. The majority of the population can afford to be oblivious to this situation because they are not actively impacted by racist people and the racist policies and institutions that are the American experience. Most black and brown people (and increasingly many non-white people in general) cannot even think about dropping their awareness of how they are viewed in this society. You speak of monthly racist incidents at AU.... trust me it happens DAILY.... even hourly. I would hazard to guess that for every racist incident that is reported there are 100 that are not. If white people in America could truly feel the weight that racism has on the psyche of even the wealthiest and most privileged black people they would be completely shocked and amazed at how we can even function. It is the first week of May 2017 and my FB feed this morning is depressing as hell!!! Without even looking past what has been posted today (its is only 8 AM)... I see:
