Nephew went, he called it the ultimate think tank, he liked it but said its very very intense with very intense kids. He left after a year because he realized he did not want to be so far away from his family (which really means his girlfriend haha) to whom he is now engaged.

Mudd is really exceptional, but you have to make sure the fit is right. It is super demanding. There is a heavy dose of grade deflation and only 8 kids have ever graduated with a 4.0. Every student is required to take math/chem/bio/CS/physics courses, and 25% of their courses have to be in the humanities and arts, so there's basically no room for exploration. But the grads do well. #2 for highest salaries of any college, #2 for PhD production.

The Claremont system is unbeatable; the other four schools, especially Pomona and CMC, are among the best LACs out there. Having access to their courses, students, organizations, events, dining halls, and more helps make tiny Mudd feel much bigger than its size would give away.

Selectivity- Mudd usually ranks in the top 5 for most selective colleges in the country by SAT. It's as hard to get into as Caltech and MIT IMO. Yes, the others have lower admit rates, but they're also more well-known so they could be getting weaker apps. You can be assured almost no one is applying to Mudd who isn't a strong STEM student.

Wrong Claremont College. But I do appreciate your trolling Google search skills. Well played.

This article does seem to relate to the Claremont Consortium located in California which includes Harvey Mudd, Pomona, etc.

Well duh. They're neighboring schools. But why in the world do 2 students at a different college (which is basically culturally the opposite of Mudd) make Claremont a mean place?

It helps to be an athlete to get in at the Claremont Schools. They are small so to field all of their teams about 30% of the spots go to varsity athletes.

A bunch of kids applied from my DC's class this past year to a variety of the Claremont Schools. Only a NMSF got in.

I attended another Claremont College - but spent a lot of time at Mudd. They truly were the best years of my life!!

It is about as good and rigorous an undergrad engineering degree you could find. It does sound a bit too hard, at least for my kid.

Very tough and competitive school. DS is at Pomona and he says the HM kids are very stressed all of the time.

The Claremont Colleges, however, are fantastic. Has your kid thought of Pomona? DS is a bio-chem major and loves his program.

FWIW, I do know a kid who is there now. He seems happy and says he likes the school. That said, his workload is heavier than his science-major friends are experiencing at MIT, Harvard, and UChicago.

Workload is a big issue. Read the consultants' report embedded in this article from the student newspaper:
