OP here, nope to the vespa...it's about 20 miles each way, highways but then some narrow twisty roads

Know what you want first. Find the car at dealers online. Call around and shop for the best price before you go. No haggling at carmax, but you'll pay more. I like negotiating, and got a great deal at Darcars last time I bought a car.

Also, have you looked into renting a car from an airport via priceline? I once "named my own price" and paid $11/day to rent a car (this was in FL a few years ago, but still). He might have to turn in the car every few weeks or after a month, but it could be cheaper and easier than buying a car that will only be used fir a couple months.

Will car purchase, tax, title, insurance, gas, parking permit and all other car issues really be cheaper than taking a cab everyday? You will not get anything cheaper than the 1500 it will cost you to rent a car once you add in all the other factors.

Craigslist or cars.com is pretty good.

I would definitely buy from a private party, preferably with title in hand. You can save a couple Grand on a 10k car.

Have you looked at the cost of using Uber Pool? It's actually pretty cheap.

College DS was awarded fantastic summer internship, but it's not accessible by public transportation. At all. (I tried to put it in Trip Planner DC, it said sorry, that's not possible.)
I looked at car rental places, but he's 18 turning 19, and I can't find anyplace where he's old enough to rent.
He has a zipcar membership from college, but it would run over 100 dollars a day, 5 or 6 days a week.
If I rent a car for myself and give him mine, it would run $1650 for the 2 months.
I figure it makes more sense to get him a used car. He won't be taking the car back to college, it's a city with awful parking, worse than here.
Comparing TrueCar or Edmunds, which would be a better place to scout a used car?
Any other good sites to suggest?
Any other options to explore before I buy?
